Description
Up for purchase is a rare hardback copy ofWalapai Papers: Historical
Reports, Documents, and Extracts from Publications Relating to the Walapai Indians of Arizona
.
It was issued in 1936 by the United States Government Printing Office. It was issued as Senate Documents Vol. 14, 74th Congress, 2nd Session.
The book measures 6 x 9.25-inches in size, and contains 364 pages including an index.
This amazing book contains the contents of all the government documents that have anything to do with the Walapai from many different sources, such as the Department of Interior correspondence with the Secretary of War, Headquarters of the Army-Adjutant General's Office, report of teachers in charge of the Walapai, Adjutant General of the Department of Arizona, Office of Indian Affairs, and on and on.
The contents begin with an extract from "On the Trail of a Spanish Pioneer: The Diary and Itinerary of Francis Graces, 1775-76." Most of the reports are from the 1800's. In the early records they are variously referred to as the Hualopais, Hualapais, Hualpai, Ho Allo Pi, etc. The reports from the 1900's are more descriptive of the reservation. Of course, they are referred to as a "decadent tribe.'
